Reconstruction—the Civil War’s “Third Act”

Three Sessions: Fridays, Sept. 21, 28, Oct. 5; 1:30-3:30 PM

Location: Wesley Acres, Theater, 3520 Grand Ave., Des Moines

Cost: $36

Class Limit: 35

Current debates over Confederate monuments, white supremacy and states’ rights tend to center on the Civil War; yet it is the Civil War’s “third act,” that truly illuminates these debates. Without understanding the postwar Reconstruction Era we miss the whole story—and therefore a crucial piece of our national identity and racial history. Over the course of three classes we’ll examine this often-overlooked period and consider the whole picture—South, West and the enduring legacy of misinterpretation.

Instructor Cynthia Ingham has a PhD in early American history from the University of Kansas. She has taught at the University of Arkansas, Florida Atlantic University and the University of Toledo. Her experience also includes serving with the Peace Corps in China.
