State Supreme Court in Action

Optional observations of oral arguments: Thursday, September 19; 9:30 AM-Noon; 1:30- 4:30 PM

A guided tour of the Supreme Court Building will include a history of the building, the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals. The guide will explain how the Iowa appellate court system functions, how judges are appointed and how the Iowa court system differs from the federal court system. A Supreme Court justice will speak to the group and answer questions. The following week on Thursday students may return to hear oral arguments with the court on a case yet to be selected. Cases usually last about 35 minutes, and observers are asked to enter or leave only during the pauses between cases.
