The City of Des Moines is being transformed at a historic rate with new hotels, condos, and businesses developing quickly. Learn how our community plans, attracts new business, locates buildings, renews its neighborhoods, and provides infrastructure for these developments. The Planning and Urban Design Division performs long-range and development planning, urban design, and planning support for downtown projects and prepares the city’s Comprehensive Plan, among its many responsibilities.

Instructor Michael Ludwig, AICP, is Planning Administrator for the City of Des Moines. Michael has over 20 years of experience in city planning, zoning, urban development, growth management, affordable housing, and grant administration. Prior to moving to Des Moines in 2001, Michael held positions as the Planning Director for the City of Marion; City Planner for Fort Collins, Colorado; and Housing Analyst for Sioux City. Michael earned his Bachelor of Science degree in community and regional planning from Iowa State University and his Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Iowa. Additional city of Des Moines staff will contribute to course instruction.
