Examine the historical backgrounds of two timely topics: political shenanigans and immigration disputes. Did you know, for example, that there was a tie vote in the Electoral College election of 1800, and a person not running for president tried to topple candidate Thomas Jefferson? And over the years many immigrant groups have been strongly resisted—Italians, Eastern European immigrants in general, Catholics, Irish, Chinese and Japanese. They all have interesting stories.

Instructor Richard Parker earned a BS from Iowa State University and an MA in history from Drake University. He taught US history and other social studies classes at Des Moines Hoover High School for more than 30 years. Now retired, Rich is a professional watercolor artist.
