Genealogy 101

Two Sessions: Fridays, Sept. 7, 14; 1-2:30 PM

Location: Iowa Genealogical Society, 628 E. Grand Ave., Des Moines

Cost: $18

Class Limit: 15

Want to learn about your family history but don’t know where to start? If so, this is the course for you! The first session will cover the basics in researching your family history—the best websites for genealogical research; the keys to using them efficiently; and the necessity for in-person research. Then you'll begin to record what you already know about your family on provided forms. The second session will be a hands-on workshop, allowing time to find your family in the census and other library records. You may bring your own laptop for research or use one provided in the IGS Library.

Instructor Theresa Liewer teaches beginning and advanced genealogy classes at the Iowa Genealogical Society. She began researching her family history 40 years ago, mostly through letters. Although she now uses many online tools, Theresa believes there is still room for the more traditional avenues of research.
