Breast Cancer in Iowa:
Training Doctors, Saving Lives
At the University of Iowa, multi-disciplinary research in the College of Engineering and the Carver College of Medicine is helping doctors learn to detect breast cancer early—and to reduce the impact of this devastating disease in Iowa and beyond.
The UI Alumni Association, College of Engineering, and Division of Continuing Education have asked the help of Senior College of Greater Des Moines in promoting a free educational program related to this research. The program will be the evening of November 13 at the Pappajohn Education Center, 1200 Grand Avenue, Des Moines.
Dr. Geb Thomas will describe his work in developing prosthetic breasts with moving electronic “tumors” that give doctors critical training and experience. Dr. Thomas will bring several prototypes of the prosthetic devices and encourages audience participation in learning about them.
Dr. Thomas is a UI associate professor of mechanical engineering and an expert in robotics and virtual reality. He collaborates with colleagues in the UI Carver College of Medicine and the University of Virginia School of Medicine to aid in early tumor detection with prosthetic breast research.
